ADDRESSING THE ELEPHANT IN THE VOTE HEALTH ROOM

During the current financial year the Government plans to spend around $15.9 billion on New Zealanders’ health, so the recent announcement that it plans to develop a health strategy makes good sense.

The announcement quite rightly focused on aligning health and economic goals, and it also stressed the value of alignment with health sector priorities such as childhood obesity or improving the health of vulnerable groups. This is all well and good but will it be a case of more of the same kinds of health care and research, only better aligned? Or will there be a strategic emphasis on thinking outside the pharmaceutical square to include more funding for integrative medicine – a medical model that an increasing number New Zealanders and health professionals are turning to?
